Historical marker and mausoleum for William Rufus King. Old Live Oak Cemetery in Selma, AL

Stolen Burial of Only Vice President from AL

Selma, AL

Burial site of William Rufus King, a founder of Selma and the highest-ranking public official ever from Alabama: he served 45 days under Franklin Pierce before passing away at 67 from tuberculosis. His remains were disputed as his family wished to keep him at his plantation, Chestnut Hill, but city pride won out and his body was secretly exhumed and relocated to Selma's Old Live Oak Cemetery. Cemetery maps are available onsite or at the Chamber of Commerce.
