A small yellow cottage sits next to a gingko tree with bright yellow fall colors on the left. On the right, it overlooks the wide Alabama River with forested banks.

Bridge Tender’s House

Selma, AL

The bridge tender's house was built in the 1880s at the site of Selma's first bridge across the Alabama River (before construction of the Edmund Pettus Bridge). During that time, a bridge tender lived here, collected tolls and opened the bridge for ships. While it is private property, visitors are welcome to come see it from the sidewalk. Or, if you're staying the night in Selma, then you can book it on AirBNB. It offers some of the most scenic river views in the city.
