Interior photo of a concrete art installation called The Subrosa Pantheon. It is a circular, concrete room with a large open-air circular opening at the top, a small circular pool in the floor, and a narrow passageway at the back that leads outside.

The Subrosa Pantheon

Newbern, AL

Samuel "Mockbo" Mockbee, cofounder of Auburn's widely renowned Rural Studio, designed The Subrosa Pantheon as a place for reflection and sharing secrets. "Subrosa" is a nod to an ancient Roman technique of hanging flowers from the ceiling as a symbol of confidentiality. Following Mockbee's death in 2001, his daughter Carol completed the installation based on her father's notes and designs. If you make the drive for a visit, don't forget to bring your secrets.
