One of the Oldest Independent Black Churches in the South
Gainesville, AL
Built by newly freed slaves, Clark Chapel United Methodist Church (1867) is one of the oldest surviving independent Black churches in the South. Still owned by the descendants of its founders, the town renovated the church in 2018 and held Gainesville's first ever fully integrated church service. It is now included on the town's rotating church schedule.
